'I'm at breaking point... it's not worth it': Emails reveal Sarah Palin almost quit early over affair claims and family life intrusion By JOHN STEVENS FOR THE DAILY MAIL and PAUL BENTLEY FOR THE DAILY MAIL and MARK DUELL Updated: 19:49 GMT, 29 June 2011 e-mail 79 View comments Resignation: Sarah Palin stepped down from her position as Alaska Governor in July 2009 - one year after she was thinking about quitting over family life intrusion and affair allegations A fascinating email exchange has revealed how Sarah Palin almost resigned from her job as Alaska Governor thanks to constant intrusion into her family life and rumours about an affair. She described herself as ‘at the breaking point' from ‘hurtful gossip' about her family life by Wasilla blogger Sherry Whitstine - before an aide encouraged her to ‘hang in there'. The 47-year-old was coming under fire at the time in July 2008 from the blogger, known as ‘syrin', and was clearly feeling the strain of the job, saying: ‘Many days I feel like it's not worth it'. The messages were found as reporters and critics scoured for scandal in 24,000 pages of her personal emails during her time as Alaska Governor published for the first time today. Her long-time friend and aide Ivy Frye forwarded her an email sent to the Anchorage Daily News newspaper that claimed the blogger's comments ‘are never on topic, nor are they civil'. Ms Whitstine, whom Mrs Palin refers to as ‘Sherry', ‘accuses the governor of having an affair or makes hateful comments about her young children', the message said. This prompted Mrs Palin to say: ‘Guys, I may be pretty wimpy about this family stuff, but I feel like I'm at the breaking point with the hurtful gossip about my family that Sherry and others get away with. ‘Bear with me. I hate this part of the job and many days I feel like it's not worth it when they have to put up with the hate that spews from people like Sherry, and there are others.' That emotional email prompted an exchange with aide Rosanne Hughes, who said: ‘Governor, do you know how loved you are? These four or five bitter people are so not representative.' A response came minutes later from Mrs Palin's daughter Bristol, who wrote while her mother was driving that they ‘were just praying about the hurt and anger that comes with her job'. Mrs Palin eventually resigned from her post as Alaska Governor around a year later in July 2009. Other correspondence from Palin's time as governor appears to show a woman far more concerned about the pigment of her skin than about the nuances of office. Scroll down for email transcripts Mad scramble: Reporters load the thousands of documents from Sarah Palin's time as governor of Alaska From attempting secretly to install a tanning bed in the governor's mansion, to complaining that her hair looked like a mullet, the emails offer an intimate portrait of a politician constantly concerned about image. Far from being the natural ‘hockey mom' she would like us all to believe she is, the Tea Party darling comes across as concerned about her media portrayal as the archetypal politician.   The huge dossier of emails from her inauguration as the first female governor in 2006 through to 2008, when she was plucked from obscurity to become the Republican vice-presidential candidate, chart the rise of the self-proclaimed 'Mama Grizzly'. The emails revealed: Palin praised Barack Obama for giving a 'great speech' just weeks before she joined John McCain on the Republican ticket Referred to George W. Bush as 'prez' and didn't see the need to travel to Washington D.C. just to hear him speak Paranoid about her media image, not being able to monitor every piece of coverage and receiving death threats Linked Bill Allen, a key figure in a politically-damaging corruption scandal, to her defeated predecessor Frank Murkowski Emails littered with colourful phrases such as 'holy moly', 'shindig', 'right on', 'I'm game' and 'holy flippin crap' She got lost on the way to a Christmas party and had to email aides for help She suffered from computer problems, such as losing two weeks of messages and finding her machine would not turn on In a remarkable display of vanity, Mrs Palin had a tanning bed installed in the Alaska Governor's Mansion and did her best to try to cover up the purchase, the emails confirmed. Despite taking time to install because of the power required, her aides worked diligently after she requested they get it up and running. They were told not to tell anyone about what they were doing in case the information became public. In one email, one of her staffers asks: 'Did Gail at the AK club say that she'd be discreet about your purchase?' In a response to an aide, Mrs Palin says she wants the machine but appears more concerned about how the purchase will be viewed by the media. She wrote: 'The press from the ADN (Anchorage Daily News) just called about the sun bed. Any idea where this would have come from?' Family: This photo taken around the time she was thinking about quitting. From left (back row): son Track and husband Todd, (second row) daughter Willow, Mrs Palin, daughter Bristol, (at front) daughter Piper After the work was finally completed, aide Erika Fagerstrom, who coordinated the effort, wrote to the governor: ‘On a day like today -I wish the bed was ready to go for you to use right away!!' The bill for the tanning machine, which is estimated to have cost about $35,000, is not thought to have been footed by the taxpayer. Mrs Palin's concern about her image runs throughout the emails and in one exchange she displays anger at how press materials are presenting her husband, snowmachine champion Todd. 'Todd asked the picture to be changed a couple of months ago. They're still using an old snowmachine picture of his,' she wrote, adding that at a national meeting of state governors, 'the other spouses have professional photos and updated bios'. Reporters today frantically pored over the tens of thousands of pages of the emails, which have been released under Freedom of Information laws after years of campaigning. 24,199 pages of emails were released by the Alaskan Governor's office, but they also withheld 2,275 pages. Below is the email Don sent to ADN. It's not much, but we were trying to bring there attention to this ongoing and very frustrating situation. Her comments are downright libelous. You're right - she's a crazy hater. -- From: Ivy Frye Sent: 8 July 2008 9:24pm To: Donny Benson Subject: please send this email to adn and bcc me on it - thanks!! Hey, Cut the body of this email and paste into a new email and sent to [email protected] Dear Sir or Madam, I'm writing to bring your attention to the increasingly inapropriate comments posted by the blogger syrin. Every day she posts comments that have absolutely no bearing on policy. For example, today the ADN posted a positive story on the national press Governor Palin is receiving, yet syrin accuses the governor of having an affair or makes hateful comments about her young children. I don't often feel compelled to write, but syrin's comments are never on topic, nor are they civil as is stated in the terms of use. Thank you for your time. The former governor repeatedly wrote 'holy moly' in many of the colloquial emails, along with other trademarks, such as, 'ugh', 'thank the lord' and 'unflippinbelievable'. In the emails, Mrs Palin admits she finds it difficult to monitor coverage across every newspaper, radio and television - and said she needed her team to ‘counter comments to the misinformation that's being spread out there'. In one email she described a letter writer's ‘goofy comments' and in another talked about ‘totally false' allegations that she had banned all staffers from talking to the press. ‘I'll clarify again what has already been expressed by me as my desire to see you all have the freedom to communicate with the public and the press in any and all manner you deem appropriate,' she wrote. She wrote: 'He gave a great speech this morn in Michigan - mentioned Alaska. Stole ou[r] Energy Rebate $1,000 check idea, stole our TC-Alaska gasline talking points, etc. So .... we need to take advantage of this a[nd] write a statement saying he's right on.' The correspondence includes a collection of gushing congratulatory emails she received after being named as John McCain's running mate. Told by an aide she had 'knocked their socks off!', Mrs Palin replied: 'Can you believe it!....Pray! I love you.' Heavy load: The emails released Friday were first requested during the 2008 White House race by citizens and news organis While Mrs Palin often criticises Obama for using teleprompters, the emails reveal she once arranged a highly staged interview around a per-prepared speech. Aides arranging the TV interview on energy issues insisted answers were taped before the questions were added later. The emails also reveal the strain she was under over the so-called Troopergate scandal after she fired a police chief after he refused to sack a state trooper who had been through a fractious divorce with Mrs Palin's sister. 'I do apologise if I sound frustrated with this one,' she wrote to an advisor. 'It's killing me to realise how misinformed leggies [legislators], reporters and others are on this issue.' The emails also revealed a darker side to Mrs Palin's fame when she was selected to be John McCain's running mate - she received several vicious death threats, which she swiftly forwarded to aides without comment. Reporters and photographers crowded into a small office today to pick up boxes of containing hundreds of pounds of paper and began poring over them. Aides for the publicity hungry potential presidential candidate played down the significance of the release in a statement. 'The thousands upon thousands of emails released today show a very engaged Gov. Sarah Palin being the CEO of her state,' said the treasurer of SarahPAC, Tim Crawford. 'The emails detail a governor hard at work. Everyone should read them.' The files include emails from Mrs Palin's official gubernatorial account as well as two private Yahoo accounts she used to conduct state business, a practice that critics said circumvented Alaska's open-records law. Mrs Palin said she was not bothered by the release of emails, saying there are no more rocks that could be turned over about her life or time as governor. But she stressed that "a lot of those emails obviously weren't meant for public consumption" and that she expected people might seek to take some of the messages 'out of context'. THE SARAH PALIN EMAILS The emails include a range of topics from her times as governor of Alaska. --   ON BEING A HUNTER From: [email protected] Sent: 2 January 2007 6:32pm To: Meghan Stapleton Subject: Re: FW: McNeil story add Thanks Meg. Sarah Palin [[email protected]] Saturday, March 24, 2007 9:14 AM FW: RE: Governor Interview I am so incredibly proud of everyone on this Alaskan team. Thank you all for everything - the work ethic displayed by eveyone is incredible and admirable - and surely unsurpassed by any other admin team. Hang in there! I'm anxious for the session to wind down (w/no desire for special session - but if legislators believe one's warranted for agia approach then we'd conduct it in anch.) and then we will start conducting a chunk of continued administrative work out of southcentral Ak, where it will be easier to all stay connected. I appreciate everyone's sacrifices made here - especially w/time/travel logistics that are so difficult. It will become more practical and less costly soon! You, and those working w/you, are an amazing team of true Alaskans w/servants hearts. Thanks so much, Sarah -- USE TO OUR ADVANTAGE From: Sarah Palin [[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2007 10:32 PM To: Meghan Stapleton Cc: Tibbles; Michael A Balash; Joseph Bitney; John (GOV) Subject: FW: Great Reuters article Can we use any of this to our advantage encouraging daily or AP to pick it up? Sarah Palin Re-direct: Aides e-mailed state officials telling them to send correspondence to the governor's personal Yahoo account rather than her state email address WHAT WAS RELEASED? - 24,199 pages of printed emails to and from Palin will be released - Six cartons of printed files weighing around 250 pounds and printed at cost of $725 per set - Records cover first 21 months of term as Alaskan governor from December 2006 to September 2008, shortly after Republican presidential nominee John McCain chose her as his vice presidential running mate - Includes emails from Palin's official email account as well as two private Yahoo accounts she and husband Todd used to conduct state business - Emails sent between Palin and her husband and about 50 top state officials including her senior staff, her cabinet, department heads, and some other state agencies - 2,275 pages are being withheld under exemptions in the state law regarding privacy, attorney-client privilege and executive privilege - Exemptions are not mandatory but have been decided by state employees - 140 pages of emails determined to be non-records also not being released Among the first emails to be released were correspondence showing that if officials wanted to reach the governor they had to use her personal email. In an email from her official account to an Arkansas official in December 2006, an aide wrote: 'Marty, I wanted to let you know that this is a "public" address for the Governor, it is not one that she has access to. 'I check this account daily, and can forward things on, but I am worried that emails might get missed as there are times when I am unable to check it for hours.' In the months before she was named the vice presidential nominee, Palin's emails showed a governor dealing with complaints, rumours and gossip about her family. In several, she asks about the identity of someone who alleged that she had not buckled her son, Trig, properly into his car seat. In another, she laments about gossip about her family and marriage. Palin and her daughter, Bristol, appear to be travelling in a car, and Bristol emails a Palin staffer in July 2008: 'Mom and I were just praying about the hurt and anger that comes with her job. Thank you for your faith in God. 'We share it and we love you!' Bristol wrote, from her mother's personal email account. Running mate: The emails were requested under state public records laws after she was plucked from obscurity to be the Republican vice presidential candidate by John McCain in 2008 Mrs Palin linked a key figure in a politically-damaging corruption scandal to her defeated predecessor. Bill Allen, CEO of Alaska oilfield services company VECO, pleaded guilty to bribery, conspiracy and extortion after accusations he led a scheme to bribe top lawmakers in exchange for state favours. ‘FYI - I've asked Frank Bailey to help me track down some evidence of past administration's dealing with Bill Allen,' she wrote in May 2007, just one day after his guilty plea. She emailed aides for information on Mr Allen's ties to her predecessor, Frank Murkowski, who she beat in 2006 primaries. Her staffers soon replied that VECO put up $15,000 to fly Mr Murkowski and Mr Allen to a Council of State Governments meeting seven years ago in Thailand. The state has only released emails that it deems involve state-related business, and Mrs Palin's lawyers have already had a chance to vet the emails being released for privacy concerns. About 2,400 pages have been withheld because state attorneys have deemed them to contain privileged information. The emails that have been released have also been redacted to keep private information confidential. Not a communications hub: The Alaskan capital of Juneau, accessible only by air or water, where the emails were released in paper form 'NOT FOR PUBLIC CONSUMPTION': PALIN ON THE EMAIL RELEASE ‘I think every rock in the Palin household that could ever be kicked over and uncovered anything, it's already been kicked over. I don't think there's anything private in our family now,' Sarah Palin said of the release. Some of the emails ‘obviously weren't meant for public consumption,' she told Fox News on Sunday. ‘So, you know what, I'm sure people are going to capitalize on this opportunity to go through 25,000 emails and perhaps take things out of context.' As the documents were released, Palin's political action committee issued a pre-emptive statement. 'The thousands upon thousands of emails released today show a very engaged Gov. Sarah Palin being the CEO of her state,' said the treasurer of SarahPAC, Tim Crawford. 'The emails detail a governor hard at work. Everyone should read them.' With the files came a 189 page list of the 2,275 pages that were withheld. Among the emails the state chose not release were those detailing potential state appointees and judicial candidates. Several of the withheld emails related to newspapers and editorial columns including two referring to a ‘response to Juneau Empire article'. One of the messages not released was about a meeting with ‘W. Monegan' who was at the centre of the ‘Troopergate' scandal that dogged the former governor as she ran for vice president. Palin was accused of sacking Walt Monegan after he refused to fire her ex-brother-in-law from his police job. She faced allegations that she had abused her positions as governor as was criticised by an ethics investigation, but was later cleared. Other withheld messages had subjects such as ‘children, dinner, and prayer'. The disclosure has taken on national prominence as Mrs Palin flirts with a run for the presidency. Even if they contain no bombshell revelations, the emails will shed new light on the day to day working life of a woman who continues to fascinate - and flabbergast - the vast majority of the American public. Mrs Palin told Fox News on Sunday that 'every rock' that could have been kicked over to uncover things in her family has been. But she also said 'a lot of those emails obviously weren't meant for public consumption' and that she expected people might seek to take some of the messages 'out of context'. The emails were first requested during the 2008 White House race as news organisations struggled to learn about the vice presidential nominee whom John McCain had plucked from obscurity.
